For over half a century, Washington Pediatrics has been committed to providing nurturing pediatric care to children of all ages. Our pediatric office watches children grow into healthy, happy adults. Our History

Washington Pediatrics was started in July 1955 when Dr. Dave Tayloe returned to his hometown of Washington to practice pediatrics after finishing his training at Duke University. He hired Geneva Morgan, who acted as his nurse, janitor, bookkeeper, and secretary. The two of them made house calls throughout Washington, NC, and surrounding areas. When patients came to the duo, the small white house on Washington Street, they would charge $2.00 an office visit, and shots were 50 cents each!

They gained more and more patients and moved into an office at 608 East 12th Street. In 1961, the Washington Pediatrics team grew when Dr. Frank Stallings joined the practice. Later on, Dr. Russel Cook joined our exceptional pediatric team. After Dr. Stallings’s retirement, Dr. Deborah Ainsworth joined Dr. Tayloe and Dr. Cook in November 1990. Dr. Dave retired due to health reasons in 1993.

As Washington Pediatrics continued to grow, we needed more space to manage the patient volume. The move to the current office at 1206 Brown Street was completed in December 2004. The practice has continued to grow by leaps and bounds, employing four physicians, two physician assistants, one staff psychologist, and over 20 nursing/clerical employees.

Washington Pediatrics, Currently

Dr. Russel Cook retired in December of 2015 but oversees our clinical laboratory. Dr. Deborah Ainsworth is the owner and President of Washington Pediatrics; she also served as the North Carolina Pediatric Society president from 2014-2016 and is still an active member.

The staff of Washington Pediatrics has been providing quality health care to the children of Eastern North Carolina for many years. With the support of its employees, this practice will continue for many more generations of children in and around Beaufort County.

Deborah L. Ainsworth, M.D.

Pediatrician
Dr. Ainsworth is a graduate of the Eastern Virginia School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA. Since 1990, she has been a part of the Washington Pediatrics team. As the current president and owner of our pediatric office, she is committed to the comprehensive care of children. She strives to make Washington Pediatrics the best medical facility it can be.

She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the North Carolina Pediatric Society. Special interests include children with special health care needs, learning disabilities, and ADHD.

Judit Aranyos, M.D.

Pediatrician
A graduate of Pecs Medical School, Hungary, Dr. Aranyos completed her pediatric residency at ECU (Pitt County Medical Hospital), NC. She has been board-certified since 2008. She has been at Washington Pediatrics since 2008.

Stephanie Turnage, PA-C

Physician Assistant
A graduate of East Carolina University with a BS degree in Chemistry, Stephanie later received her BS degree in Physician Assistant Studies. She was an honor student and a member of Phi Etta Sigma Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She is a member of the professional organizations for physician assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants.

Debra S. Clancy, M.D.

Pediatrician
Dr. Clancy received her Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing from West Virginia Wesleyan College and was employed in the Emergency Room of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh prior to receiving her Doctorate in Medicine from West Virginia University. She completed her pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron and served an additional year at CHMCA in the capacity of chief resident. She worked in private pediatric practice in Ohio and Pennsylvania prior to joining Washington Pediatrics in 1995. Dr. Clancy is Board Certified in Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Stephanie Hayes-Harris, MA, LPA

Staff Psychologist
Stephanie Harris graduated from Davis & Elkins College in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology & Human Services. In 1998, she completed her Master of Arts Degree in Psychology, concentrating in Diagnosis & Intervention, at Marshall University Graduate College.

She has been with the practice since 2004. She specializes in conducting comprehensive psychological evaluations to identify learning, emotional and behavioral disorders. She also provides individual psychotherapy, play therapy, behavior management, and parent training to treat childhood disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and depression.

Mark A. Karpinski, M.D

Pediatrician
Dr. Karpinski is a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at the Medical Center of Delaware, is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics, and is the member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Karpinski joined Washington Pediatrics full-time in 2004.

Lauren Nickson, PA-C

Physician Assistant
Lauren completed her Bachelors of Science in Public Health at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, in 2014. She then moved to Eastern NC to complete a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Medicine, achieving that goal in 2018. Lauren lives in Winterville and enjoys baking, traveling, and winning pub trivia with her friends!
